Online Birds and Wildlife Sound Library

Beyond birdsong — the island's other voices

The Library also archives calls from Sri Lanka's other vocal wildlife — mammals, frogs and toads, and insects — recorded in the same forests, wetlands and gardens as the birds.

Frogs and Toads

Frogs and toads form the major part of Sri Lanka's amphibian diversity. This group, also known as 'Anurans', have the ability to produce distinct vocal sounds. These are a major part of the night soundscape, and are also heard during daytime, in diverse habitats from home gardens to deep forests and freshwater wetlands. They tend to deceive people into thinking they are made by a bird, insect, small mammal, or even some mechanical device! Whether you're a birdwatcher, or a nature explorer with a wider interest in natural history, you'll come across the sounds of frogs and toads at whichever habitats you visit in Sri Lanka.
